EQUITABLE MINDS THE MOVEMENT
CLOSING THE MENTAL HEALTH GAP IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY
we're on a mission to raise a $150,000 in scholarships for the next generation of culturally competent african american mental health professionals
Let's look at some numbers that we feel attribute to the under representation of black and brown providers...
Black female high school students were found 60% more likely to commit suicide than non-Hispanic females of the same age.
"Blessed and Still Stressed:" Religious coping is often the preferred method for mental health within the Black community, largely due to mistrust of medical providers and the lack of mental health literacy
Systemic racism has a devastating impact on the mental health of Black men, who are 20% more likely to report serious psychological distress compared to their white counterparts.
JOIN the MOVEMENT to close the mental health gap in the black community
MORE NUMBERS...
  • Over 7 million Black individuals identified having mental illness.
  • Less than 8% of therapists are Black compared to over 75% White.
  • Only 2% of psychiatrists are Black vs. 64% White.
  • Because less than 2 percent of American Psychological Association members are Black or African American, some may worry that mental health care practitioners are not culturally competent enough to treat their specific issues.
We address the underrepresentation of African-American mental health providers in relation to the increasing need for services within the community. Cultural competence is fundamental for mental health providers, yet the current landscape falls short in meeting this need. As a result, we are faced with the following startling statistics:

EMPOWERING DIVERSE VOICES

HBCUs have long been a breeding ground for exceptional talent and have produced some of the most influential figures in various fields. You can amplify the voices of aspiring mental health professionals from HBCUs, fostering diversity and inclusivity in the mental health sector.

ADDRESSING THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS

Access to culturally competent care remains limited. By investing in the education and training of HBCU scholars, you will contribute to closing the gap in mental health ensuring that underserved populations receive the support they deserve.

LASTING LEGACY FOR MENTAL HEALTH EQUITY

We can dismantle barriers, uplift communities, and create a future where mental health care is inclusive, culturally responsive, and readily available.
